Snow or Ice on Roadways or Sidewalks Reminder

Public Works Reminder: Do Not Place Snow or Ice on Roadways or Sidewalks

Please be advised, it is a violation of the Highway Traffic Act to place snow or ice on the roadway. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 181. No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in writing to do from the Ministry or the road authority responsible for the maintenance of the road.

Shovelling or plowing snow and ice onto roadways and sidewalks is a pedestrian and motorist safety issue, as well it impedes Township roadway and sidewalk clean-up work.

Snow that is pushed across municipal roads is a hazard to our Plow Operators and equipment. As the piles grow and become frozen, the banks can push the truck sideways into the oncoming lane. As winter continues the piles begin to narrow the road more and more, making an obstacle for traffic that can force them to crowd the center of the road which could cause a collision. Pushing snow across roadways also leaves ridges that are also dangerous for our trucks as well as regular motor vehicles.

Please do not shovel or plow snow onto roadways or sidewalks.
