Events and Programs

Details of events and programs that run at our 6th Line Transfer Station are indicated and updated below.

 Clear Garbage Bag Program

The Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen is launching a new Clear Garbage Bag Program for 2021.

This mandatory program has shown to have a positive impact on keeping recyclable materials out of landfills while helping to protect the environment.

Keep it simple. Sort your recyclable materials properly, compost when possible, and throw away the remaining waste. Protecting our planet is important for our present and for our future.

Bag tags will continue to be required for disposal of garbage in a clear bag, or just a privacy bag for both curbside collection, or at the Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Transfer Stations.

Important Dates

  • January 1, 2021: Clear Garbage Bag Program begins

This is the unofficial start to using clear garbage bags for household garbage. Residents will begin using clear garbage bags for their curbside collection and for disposal at all Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Transfer Stations.

  • July 1, 2021: Clear Garbage Bag Program becomes mandatory

This is the official start to using clear garbage bags for household garbage. Recyclable material must be removed from garbage bags. This becomes mandatory for curbside collection and for disposal at all Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Transfer Stations.

How to begin:

Program begins!

The unofficial Clear Garbage Bag Program begins January 1, 2021.

The official Clear Garbage Bag Program will become mandatory July 1, 2021.

Sorting your material!

Properly sort your recyclable materials into your blue boxes (fibres bin and containers bin). We highly encourage composting when possible either in your own backyard or by taking your loose compost and organic materials to the 6th Line Transfer Station. Place all other waste into your clear garbage bag. If your bag contains more than 10% recyclable material, collectors have the right to refuse it.

Placing your materials curbside!

Garbage may be set out for collection in the following ways:

  • Place the clear bags (30lbs or less) in a garbage can - One (1) privacy bag can be included in your clear bag.
  • In clear bags (30lbs or less) - One (1) privacy bag can be included in your clear bag.
  • In a privacy bag: a privacy bag is a small grocery sized bag which may be opaque (non see-through) to shield private items.

If you only produce as much garbage as would fit within your privacy bag, the privacy bag can be left at the curb for collection or dropped off at the Transfer Station without placing it inside of a clear bag. Garbage tags are required for a privacy bag on just as they are for a full (30lbs) clear garbage bag.

 Question and Answers

Q.

What is a clear garbage bag?

A.

A clear garbage bag must be ‘see-through’. Curbside collection workers and landfill attendants must be able to easily view the contents within your garbage bag in order to ensure there are no recyclable materials or hazardous waste.

Q.

When does the program start?

A.

The program will begin January 1, 2021. Although opaque bags (non see-through) will still be picked up at the curb and accepted at the transfer stations, residents will be required to use clear bags July 1, 2021. The program will become mandatory July 1, 2021.

Q.

Do clear bags cost more and where can I buy clear garbage bags?

A.

Clear garbage bags generally cost the same as dark bags of the same size and style. Many retailers in Havelock, Campbellford, Norwood and Peterborough already carry clear garbage bags in a variety of sizes.

Q.

What happens if I don't use clear bags after July 1, 2021?

A.

After July 1, 2021 opaque bags will no longer be collected at the curb or accepted at any Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Transfer Stations.

Q.

What is a privacy bag?

A.

A privacy bag may be either, one (1) single small grocery bag OR one (1) small white kitchen catcher. You may not have more than one (1) privacy bag within your clear garbage bag.

Q.

I use opaque bags (non see-through) under my sink and throughout my home (i.e. grocery bags or white kitchen catchers), can I tie them up and throw them into my clear bag?

A.

A single small grocery bag OR a single kitchen catcher is permitted within your clear bag to serve as a privacy bag. Waste bin contents from around the house can be dumped into larger clear bags or use clear kitchen catcher bags through-out your home; clear kitchen catchers should be available at local retailers. Multiple opaque privacy bags inside the clear bag will not be accepted.

Q.

What if I have a special circumstance and need a larger privacy bag?

A.

The Township can accommodate special medical circumstances. Please contact the Municipal Office at 705-778-2308 or complete the Medical Waste Exemption Form.
